Monday Morning Music | Wake up April

...It will be Summer soon. And you'll be sipping your morning coffee in the afternoon.

That's one of my favorite lyrics from The Promise Ring's song "Wake Up April" from their album Wood/Water. The album came out many years ago, but it still finds it's way into my Spring rotation every year.

One of my favorite memories of the weeks following my college graduation is sitting on the deck - quiet all around, listening to this album with the volume down low - enjoying my coffee in the afternoon.

Carolina & Andrej | expecting | portraits around Boston

Carolina & Andrej are expecting thier first child in the next few weeks. Before the little one comes around they wanted to have some photographs to remember this time in their lives by - the moment before quite a bit changes.

Peter & I enjoyed getting to know them as we walked around the city. One of the many awesome talents that their child will have is the ability to speak three languages from the start. Carolina speaks Portuguese and Andrej speaks Slovenian, and they both speak English. Their child is already pretty lucky, I'd say. Not to mention inheriting their good looks too.

Spring is here and Peter & I are back at work photographing our lovely couples. We had a great shoot with Sarah & Patrick this weekend. Their blog post will be up in the next week or so - but check back for a few other shoots coming this week!

 

Monday Morning Music | After the Silence

Sometimes I drive alone in my car without the radio on…just silence. Silence gives me the space to think - to process - to clear my head. In the three days following my mom's death there was no music to be heard in my house - just silence. We spoke of course, but in between those moments there was silence. On the third day the silence seemed to take over - where it was once needed it was now way too loud (if that makes any sense).

That morning I awoke before anyone else and felt a strong desire to hear The Band. Their music and their voices were the only ones that seemed right. They had always been a big part of our family's musical life, but had recently been played quite a bit. Two months before my mom had given everyone a copy of The Band's new 5-disc set The Band: A Musical History for Christmas.

I put the speakers on low and took in the first sounds I had heard in a few days, and was incredibly comforted. The Band was practically the only music we listened to for the next month.

Last week Levon Helm, drummer of The Band died. I'm sad to see him go, but so grateful for all of the music he left behind.

Letting things happen

Yesterday we took a drive to NJ to bring my Dad home, who had been visiting us in Boston to watch my brother run the marathon. Right before we were about to leave I was feeling like I should stay and get some work done – Peter was fine with driving him by himself. But then I decided that going for the long drive down - and the long drive back would force me to just think - not do. Those long drives are a way for me to clear my head.

As I sat in the back seat, listening to the radio and watching the newly budding trees pass by, things began to happen. When I checked my phone for emails I was greeted with a bunch of wonderful opportunities. My business had been growing while I took a break from actively trying to make things happen.

I said yesterday (in a tweet), "Recently I've noticed when I stop worrying and actively disengage from trying to make things happen - that's when great things come my way."

Making plans is necessary, and a good thing - but you also need to leave space for change and growth to happen.

We arrived home just a bit before the sun began to set. The lake was calm and the air was still - the sky was a beatiful shade of blue and grey. I sat and left space open for change to come - and then the sky evolved into a gorgeous sunset - seemingly out of nowhere.

Peter & I stayed at my house on the lake for no more than an hour, but that hour was incredibly rejuvenating. And, just for fun, here's a short video I took while standing on the dock. Yes, it's a bit shaky - and a bit quick in parts - but you'll get to see just what a beautiful night it was!
